- Accommodation - A place where you live
- Contract - An official agreement that allows you to stay in a property
- Contribute – to pay a certain amount of the cost
- Deposit - money that you give to your new landlord to guarantee that you will pay your rent and not break the rules of the contract or lease
- Direct debit - an amount of money regularly taken out of a bank account.
- Disputes – disagreement; fight
- Due - the day you agreed you pay, e.g. 4th of each month.
- Essentially sound – good condition; everything working as it should be
- Estate agency - a business that sells, rents or manages houses or other properties.
- Financial circumstances – the amount of money you have; your in-coming and out-going money
- Fuel - a source of energy that is burned, e.g. wood, coal, gas
- Interior - inside
- Lease - An official agreement that allows you to stay in a property
- Maintenance - the act of keeping something in good condition
- Obligation - something that someone should or should not do
- Permission - approval to do something; to be allowed to do something
- PPS number - Personal Public Service – see Employment and Welfare booklet
- Proof – proves that something is true or real.
- Property – the house or apartment that you rent
- Rent - the money you pay to use a property is called
- Reference - a report from another person (old landlord or lady) that tells how you are as a tenant
- Refund – to get back the money/deposit that you paid
- Refuse - rubbish
- Rent book – a book that officially records your rent payments
- Responsible – in charge of
- Standards – an agreed level of housing conditions
- Temporary - continuing for only a limited period of time
- Terms - rules
- 28 days’ notice – to tell your landlord that you will move out 28 days in advance
